A day after Denmark’s Allan Simonsen loses his life in Le Mans crash, veteran driver claims ninth victory

Kristensen, here overcome with emotion after the race, dedicated the win to 'a great Dane'Denmark’s Tom Kristensen capped an emotional 24 Hours of Le Mans for the nation today.

Kristensen, driving together with Loïc Duval of France and Allan McNish of Scotland, claimed his record ninth win in the historic endurance race a day after fellow Dane Allan Simonsen fatally crashed shortly after the start. 

In a post-race interview with Danish, Kristensen said he had intended to dedicate the win to his recently deceased father, but said instead that the victory belonged to Simonsen. 

Kristensen, overcome with emotion, was unable to complete the interview, but during the award ceremony described Simonsen as “a great Dane”.
