Tasmanian elle-Devil tops princess poll

Mary sees off Kate in Britain vs Australia warm-up ahead of the Ashes

The Aussies love to dish it out to the Poms, and ahead of this summer’s Ashes series in England – a biennial hard-slog of 25 days of rain-interrupted cricket – the tourists hold all the bragging rights thanks to a royal ally tucked away in little old Denmark.

The Tasmanian elle-devil herself, Crown Princess Mary, might be the wrong side of 40 and have mothered four children since a relatively low-key wedding back in 2004, but that hasn’t stopped her relegating the 21st century’s most famous bride, Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, into second place in a poll to find the world’s most stylish royal.

And she’s managed to do it in Kate’s own backyard.

Pulling off a win of stunning audacity that her country’s cricketers will be seeking to emulate, the 41-year-old Danish royal triumphed in a poll conducted by myvouchercodes.co.uk that asked British women “interested in the British Royal Family” to name royals who they thought were stylish. Some 68 percent chose Mary, one percent better than Kate, 31, and seven clear of Queen Rania of Jordan.

It’s a surprising result given the location of the poll and the high-profile nature of the 2011 wedding – an advantage illustrated by the placing of Sweden's newly-wed Princess Madeleine in fifth place – but it would seem that Mary has made a big impression on fashion-conscious Brits. A further 67 percent of the respondents said they found her style inspiring and 62 percent said they would consider buying an item that Mary had been photographed wearing.

“I was genuinely surprised by the results, as I think that many would assume that everyone’s favourite royal style icon would be Kate,” Mark Pearson, the chairman of myVoucherCodes.co.uk, told British newspaper The Daily Mail. “Judging by the results, it seems that Kate has a bit of competition.”

Among the other Scandinavian royals, Sweden’s crown princess, Victoria, was seventh, and Norway’s crown princess, Mette-Marit, finished tenth, but while Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, a star of US soap ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ since late 2011, got a few votes, she failed to make the top ten.

Still she did enough to finish above British princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who came last and joint last with five and three percent respectively. Meanwhile, Princess Diana saw off competition from Grace Kelly to be named the most stylish royal of all time.

In the spirit of competition, we'd like to hold a contest of our own. Write a caption for the picture above in the comments field below. The caption selected by Copenhagen Post staff as the best will receive a Copenhagen Post T-shirt. Captions must be posted by Wednesday, July 3 at 8pm
