The labour disagreement that is expected to result in a lockout of council-run schools starting on April 2 could have an impact on those applying for citizenship and permanent residency, say teacher representatives.
The lockout would affect council-run language centres that provide Danish education to foreigners. Many students attending those schools are scheduled to take a language exam in May that they must pass in order for their application to be approved by authorities.
“If they don’t receive their final lessons, they won’t be able to pass, which in the worst case scenario would mean being deported,” Hanne Pontoppidan, the head of Udannelsesforbundet, a union representing 11,000 teachers, told public broadcaster DR.
