The world's largest science competition for primary and secondary school students – the Google Science Fair – is open for Danish registration. For the first time since 2010, Danish students aged 13 to 18 will have a chance to win prizes, experiences and scholarships for their original inventions.

Each year, thousands young people from more than 90 countries join the fair to showcase their talents in science, technology and engineering. The Danish organisers hope the online competition will increase interest in science among Danish students. 

Kick-off starts today
The Science Fair kicks off today and is open for applications until 18 May. The winners will be announced on 21 September at the official award ceremony in the United States. The companies sponsoring the prizes include Google, National Geographic, Lego Education and Virgin Galactic. 

Solution for combating worldwide hunger
Last year's Grand Prize was awarded to a team of three 16-year-old girls from Ireland – Ciara Judge, Émer Hickey and Sophie Healy-Thow – who developed their winning project after learning about the famine in the Horn of Africa. 

They discovered bacteria called Diazotroph that occurs naturally in soil, and found that it could be used to speed up the germination process of certain crops like barley and oats by 50 percent, potentially helping combat food shortages worldwide.

They received a $50,000 scholarship from Google, a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands and a chance to participate in astronaut training. Their school also received a $10,000 grant for science and computer equipment.
